Middleton town folk urged to donate food for those in need this Christmas

Date published: 23 November 2014

Middleton town folk are being urged to donate food for those in need this Christmas.

In the summer Middleton people donated over 1250 kg of food through the last neighbourhood food collection held in the town. This was equivalent to nearly 3000 meals of help for people who find themselves in food poverty.

Customers will again be invited to donate food in Tesco Middleton from Thursday 27 November until Saturday 29 November.

Customers will be given a special shopping list when they enter the store and be asked to pick up items of food such as long-life milk, tinned foods, meat, fish and vegetables, tea and coffee etc, before donating them in the collection point as they leave.

The food will then be used by Middleton Central Foodbank, based in the Lighthouse Project in Warwick Mill, to support local people in times of crisis.

Foodbank manager Carl Roach says: "Winter is one of the hardest time of year for people living in poverty, and this Christmas is looking especially tough as many people on low incomes are already really struggling.

"We’re delighted that Tesco are working with us to help stop local people going hungry.

"We were truly blessed by peoples generosity in the summer which helped us to open our foodbank in August, and we are now looking forward to another collection boost through people’s kindness with their donations.

"Since our opening in August we have received 5.2 tonnes of food donations, equivalent to 13,300 meals, and have given away 3.1 tonnes, or approximately 7400 meals to over 330 people of whom 115 are children. of been given three days’ emergency food in the first 6 months of this financial year."

Tesco will top up total donations by a further 30%.
