Students visit medieval bridge under Rochdale town centre

Date published: 20 January 2015

The geography department at Rochdale Sixth form College took students to visit the medieval bridge under Rochdale town centre which is set to be unveiled later in the year as part of Rochdale’s Regeneration project.

The trip, which was called 'under the bridge', was organised with the help Rochdale Borough Council  who thought it would be a nice idea to let the students from Rochdale Sixth Form College see the bridge before the official launch.

Accompanied by officials, the teachers and students were kitted out in hard hats and waders and headed downstream through the bridge. Local poet and Lancastrian dialect expert who recently appeared on hit tv show “Countryfile”, Sid Calderbank, made it an extra special experience as he recited an old Victorian poem about the river, whilst everyone stood under the bridge.

As Geography and History Student at Rochdale Sixth Form College, Dan Foy said:“It was an amazing experience to walk in the river and see the bridge.”

Geography Teacher, Graeme Dymond said: “This was such a rare opportunity for us to see the bridge that has been hidden for over 800 years. It is wonderful that Rochdale Sixth Form College can be part of this next exciting stage in Rochdale’s Regeneration”
