Simon Danczuk named in Debrett’s list of influential people

Date published: 29 January 2015

Rochdale’s Member of Parliament, Simon Danczuk, has been named one of the UK’s most influential people by Debrett’s.

Debrett’s publish an annual list of the 500 most influential people in the country.

Debrett’s made the decision based on Mr Danczuk’s campaigning work saying that: “Simon Danczuk has played an extremely influential role in bringing the ‘child abuse in high places’ scandal to the top of the political agenda.”

On being named in the list, Mr Danczuk said that it was time that places like Rochdale began to exert more influence in the country.

He said: “Often in this country it can seem as though the people who wield real influence come from a very small circle in the capital. So I’m pleased that I am flying the flag for places like Rochdale and making sure that the voices of people from Northern towns and from poor backgrounds are heard in the corridors of power.

"I am determined to carry on campaigning about child abuse and also fighting to get a better deal for Rochdale in terms of investment and economic development. I want to see a society where it is not so unusual to see someone from my kind of background appearing on a list like this.”
