Gritters keep main roads driveable

Date published: 30 January 2015

Roads across the borough have been gritted throughout the night to ensure that they are driveable today (30 January). The main roads are looking clear throughout the borough with gritters still out and about.

Steph Sharp said: “In the 14 years I've lived on Green Meadow, I've never seen a gritter come down. I'm in total shock.”

Ruth Sandiford said: “I am in Smallbridge. The roads are ok but the paths are slippy.”

The top floor of the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre car park is closed due to ice on the ramps. Staff are working to clear this and are advising shoppers to use the surface car park on Baillie Street.

Schools

Hamer Primary School is closed.

Caretaker Mr Porter was out at Moorhouse Primary School in Milnrow this morning clearing the snow so pupils could make it in.

Bins

Rochdale Council have said that todays (Friday 30 January) garden waste bin collections are suspended and will be collected in two weeks. All other bins are still being collected.

Travel

Some bus services have been suspended. Most are running as usual but some that use side roads and areas on high ground will continue to be affected by the snow and icy road conditions.

When driving in icy or snowy weather keep well back from the road user in front. Drive at a slow speed in as high a gear as possible; accelerate and brake very gently.

Weather Forecast

Rochdale is expected to have a scattering of wintry showers, especially this afternoon but generally fewer than Thursday.

Snow is mainly confined to hills, with sleet at lower levels.

Tonight, there will be further wintry showers overnight and with increasingly cold air, the showers will fall as snow to lower levels.

Greater Manchester has been issued with a yellow weather warning of ice from 4pm today until 11am tomorrow (Saturday 31 January).
