Guiding celebrates a world of differences this thinking day

Date published: 01 March 2015

Girls and young women from Rochdale joined together on Sunday 22 February with hundreds from across Oldham, Rochdale and Bury to mark one of the most significant dates in the global Guiding calendar - World Thinking Day - with an international themed celebration.

Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, members of The Senior Section and their leaders gathered at the Oasis Academy in Oldham, for the ‘Around the World…in an Afternoon’ event.

Thinking Day is celebrated globally by 10 million Guides and Girl Scouts in 145 countries and the diversity of guiding’s global membership was certainly celebrated at this event.

The event included a whole host of international activities such as craft sessions making Japanese fans, Dutch windmills, Venetian and Maori Masks, Tribal necklaces, Chinese lanterns, as well as Scottish, African and French dancing, Pilates and boot camp fitness sessions, a traditional campfire, and much more.

Savannah Relf, 5, from 41st Rochdale Rainbows said: “This has been the best day ever.”

Ellice Hanlon, 10, from 32nd Rochdale Guides, said: “World Thinking Day was great fun. It was interesting thinking about Guides in other countries and what they are doing too. My favourite activity was the Pilates.”

Michelle Wood, Brownie Leader and one of the event organisers, said: “World Thinking Day is a really important occasion for Girl Guiding members. It’s a wonderful chance for us to reflect on the fact that we’re part of something huge that gives millions of girls, young women and adults a space to be themselves, have fun and make a positive difference, no matter where they come from.”

World Thinking Day takes place each year on 22 February - the birthday of both Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, the founders of Guiding and Scouting.
