Middleton councillors welcome £1.6 million for town improvements

Middleton councillors have welcomed £1.6 million being allocated to be used to improve roads and enhance Middleton’s heritage.

At a meeting of the Middleton Township Committee on Thursday (5 March), councillors were asked to approve the implementation of a public realm improvement scheme for the northern gateway of Middleton Town Centre.

Work will include resurfacing Long Street and sections of Market Place with ‘natural sandstone.’

Sections of Rochdale Road, Cleworth Road, Cheapside, Brewster Street and Towncroft Avenue are also set to benefit from improved surfaces.

Projects are also currently being developed to carry out repairs to Long Street Methodist Church and the staircase and exedra in Jubilee Park.

Councillor Neil Emmott said: “Clearly this is welcomed. An extra £1.6 million for improvements into Middleton Town Centre is clearly welcomed. There have been some naysayers out there who say we don’t get investment but this just proves them wrong.”

Councillor June West said: “We are asked to approve £1.6 million for Middleton Town Centre and I think it is welcomed. I think we do what we can for this town and we work hard for this town.”
