The 28-year-old man was found collapsed outside the pub with head injuries. He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

The man has not yet been formally identified; it is understood a post mortem will take place this afternoon.

Gillian Cunningham, from Drake Street News, said: “It is usually quiet around here so it’s not a nice thing to wake up to.”

One man who did not want to be named said: “I think it was a fight over a girl.”

It is understood that the pub has recently been taken over and is under new management. A live singer, DJ and entertainment were on at the pub from 7pm last night (Wednesday 25 March).

Drake Street is currently cordoned off up to the Cask and Feather. Police at the scene don’t currently know how long the cordon will be in place.

Anyone with information should phone police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
