Long Hill cleaned

Date published: 22 April 2015

PCSO Tracey Atherton, Paul Whittling, two youth volunteers, Sarah and Maryam, hepled clean the area behind Long Hill on the bend of Manchester Road and Edinburgh Way.

PCSO Tracey Atherton drew REAG's attention to this particular area. At the end of the rows of houses on Long Hill, there is steep hill with trees and bushes. It links to Manchester Road and Edinburgh Way.

People have been throwing wood, wooden fences, litter and rubbish, and this beautiful site, which could be an attraction, was heavily littered. There would be a serious risk to residents if there was any fire.

Members spent two hours in cleaning the area. They brought the litter, rubbish, wooden fences down to be cleared by the staff of Rochdale Council  Environmental Services.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, Secretary, REAG, said: “Those responsible should realise that their actions are ruining the natural and environmental beauty of this beautiful site, which could be a great attraction to the visitors to Rochdale.

“Rochdale is a beautiful town with natural environmental beauty. Flytippers and litterers are damaging the positive images of the Borough of Rochdale.”

“The staff of the Environmental Services are doing their best but unless everyone takes the responsibility to keep the front and rear of his/her property, the environment will not improve.

“People with such persistent behaviour need to be fined to set an example for others. The Council is spending a lot of money on its clearance. The proceeds could be used on many useful environmental projects."
