Rochdale Library in tune with new digital piano

Date published: 23 April 2015

A digital piano, packed with cutting edge technology, is now located on the ground floor of Rochdale Central Library at Number One Riverside, and is available for everyone to play.

If you are new to playing and don't know where to begin, the clever piano will teach you, and there are built-in musical games for children to play. There is also a set of headphones and the keys are quiet so you won't disturb anyone during practice sessions.

The piano features a colour screen which can display digital sheet music with a choice of over 400 songs, and even turns the page for you!

It’s free to use and you can either call in and play, or book time in advance. You can use it six days a week, whenever the library is open.

Library Information Assistant and pianist Sarah Barron said: “Not many libraries have a piano like this so we’re very lucky. The digital piano is aimed at everyone from children to more advanced players. The built in display can give you lessons, help you practice and has tons of practical features. The sound is fantastic too, it really does sound like an acoustic piano when played out loud. Its exercises and games make learning fun for students of all ages.”

The library is planning to host 20-minute lunchtime recitals beginning this summer and are on the lookout for local pianists who would like to take part. If you’d like to play, or book a longer session, email digital.piano@rochdale.gov.uk
