A fire broke out below flats and a beauty salon on Dale Street in Milnrow tonight (Monday 27 April) around 8pm.

Milnrow resident Sheila Mason said: "I had finished work at 8pm to find that Dale Street in Milnrow was engulfed with smoke.

"Fire crews were at the scene and had to contact the shop keepers of the properties."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said: "The fire was contained by the fire fighters but whilst they were fire fighting they had to evacuate residents from the flats above.

"The building had some smoke logging, which crew assisted in clearing using fans.

"We had the situation under control by about 10pm."

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
