Welcome signs near the railway and tram stations suggested

Date published: 01 May 2015

At a planning meeting to finalise the agenda for a forthcoming conference on improving the Borough, Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) suggested there should be welcome signs - ‘Welcome to Rochdale -Birthplace of Co-operative Movement’ - near the railway and tram stations because they are gateways to Rochdale. This they said could be either a flower bed or a sign board.

REAG Secretary, Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE said: "This will enhance both the beauty and physical environment of the area.

“REAG discussed it with Councillor Mohammed Zaman and visited the site which is near the tram, Nye Bevan Medical Centre and the railway station.

“At REAG's request, Councillor Zaman will discuss this idea with the fellow councillors and find out how it could be turned into reality.”

Councillor Mohammed Zaman said: “The Borough of Rochdale is a beautiful town with natural environmental beauty. It belongs to all of us and we belong to it. It is our and our children's home. We must play our important part to keep it tidy and clean and also to give your suggestions and ideas to improve the environment in your area.”
