Sue Scott named Citizen of the Year

Sue Scott, founder of The Angel Project Community Café, has been named The Rotary Club of Middleton Citizen of the Year. Dillon Liptrot, won the Young Citizen award.

Each received a trophy and a prize of £50 presented by Glen Prendergast, The Rotary Club of Middleton Citizen of the Year 2014 and Ethan Marriott, Member of Youth Parliament for Rochdale.

Lee Wolf, Community Service Chair for Rotary Club of Middleton said: “Sue Scott left paid employment with Oldham Council to become a community volunteer. She founded The Angel Project Community Café, which provides practical, emotional and social volunteer support tailored to individual needs and circumstances she has developed a volunteertraining and support package.

“The Angel Project gives support across the generations from children through to the over 50s.

“Sue is a wonderful, giving person who works tirelessly to help others. Supported by a great team of volunteers she is doing so much to improve the lives of people around her with practical, social and emotional support”

Caroline Preece, Principal at St Anne’s Academy, said: “Dillon Liptrot is a pupil at St Anne’s Academy and has achieved highly respectable grades in his schooling.

“Dillon volunteers for ‘The Middleton Child Contact’ a church run charity aimed at mediation of parents and children who have been ‘separated’.

“He is very positive about improving and succeeding in a future career in writing or film making and is a wonderful role model for other students.”

Sue Furby, Youth & Vocational Projects Chair for Rotary Club of Middleton, said: “Dillon is a truly inspirational young man who deserves this award, putting service above self to help others who are less fortunate than himself. He is a great ambassador and superb role model for the community.”

Rotary Club of Middleton President, Rtn Keith Trinnaman said: “Our third awards evening proved a great success, where the standard of the nominee's was excellent.

“It was very difficult picking the overall winners, and congratulations go to all who were nominated for their hard work, dedication and overall attitude towards helping other's.

“We can be heartened and very proud that we have people like this in the local community of Middleton.

“This Middleton Rotary awards evening is now a firm fixture in the calendar, and I am already looking forward to the awards for 2016."

The nominees for Rotary’s Young Citizen of the Year 2014 included: 

  • Mia Linnik Holden: Mia is a very talented young dancer from Middleton
  • Nathan Meredith: Nathan was in danger of being excluded at school, he became the first student referred directly from school to ’Status 4 All’ in November, 2013
  • Babalola: As a young boy, Babalola had a very difficult time, he started with Middleton Popstars four years ago, actively involved on the Youth Forum at Middleton Popstars Academy
  • Tyler Barry: Tyler undertakes voluntary work as a Junior Warden for Rochdale Boroughwide Housing

The nominees for Rotary’s Citizen of the Year 2014 included:

  • Brenda Holmes: Brenda has been involved with Scouting in Middleton since April 1949
  • Carl Roach: Founded The Lighthouse Project and set up the local charity Inspire Middleton
  • Lisa Lee: Lisa is the Head Coach and Founder of Middleton Trampolining Club
  • Roy Thorniley: Roy is the Footpath Officer and Countryside Secretary of The Ramblers, Rochdale Group, he has recently organised a new survey and condition report of all the footpaths in the borough

The ceremony, organised by the Youth and Vocational and Community Service Committees, took place at St Anne’s Academy on 16 June 2015.

Nominations were received by the Rotary Club of Middleton throughout the year and were whittled down to ten. These ten nominees were recognised for their outstanding contribution to Middleton and were awarded certificates by Mayor Surinder Biant and Ethan Marriott, Member of Youth Parliament for Rochdale. 

Guests at the evening included Glen Prendergast, The Rotary Club of Middleton Citizen of the Year 2014, Rotary District Secretary, Philip Emmott, Tabitha Rusden, Deputy Member of Youth Parliament for Rochdale, Ethan Marriott, Member of Youth Parliament for Rochdale, who also gave an address, and the Mayor of Rochdale Surinder Biant.
