New Rochdale Pioneers to form Dale Co-operative

Date published: 02 August 2015

At the inaugural meeting of the new 'Dale Co-operative' initiative, 28 new Rochdale Pioneeers turned out on Saturday (1 August) to discuss moving the project forward.

The Dale Co-operative is the brainchild of Mark Birkett, who is on a mission to transform Rochdale, using a modern co-operative movement of local people.

Mr Birkett said: "Excellent turnout. Everybody loves the idea and wants to see it work.

"Transforming Rochdale is going to take a lot of effort. And we want all the talented people in Rochdale to help us.

"One of the first tasks is to elect a lead committee that will drive through this transformation.

"We aren't just looking for well-meaning people (although that is obviously a key pre-requisite), we will be looking for people with specific talents to offer, time to spare offering it and a willingness to work for nothing, at least for our first year of existence and probably quite a way beyond that."

The next meeting of the co-operative is on Saturday 8 August, 10.30 am at St Mary in the Baum church.

Mr Birkett added: "If you want to see the transformation of Rochdale, spread the word. Get pledging and tell everyone you know to come along on the 8 August."
