Date published: 25 August 2015

Middleton Rotary Club's annual Christmas tour of the streets of Middleton with Father Christmas looks in danger after the lorry they have used for the past few years is no longer roadworthy.

Lee Wolf, chairman of Rotary’s Community Service Committee who organise the much loved event, said: “Unfortunately the old lorry isn’t roadworthy any longer and we have to find an alternative mode of transport for Father Christmas pretty fast. The lorry carries the Father Christmas Sleigh and houses all the audio equipment and generator, etc and we are appealing for local firms to help us if they can.”

The Middleton float last hit the headlines in November 2013 when the actual Christmas Float component was stolen along with the metal container it was stored in. Local businesses rallied round and Rotary Middleton members built a replacement float just in time.

The Christmas Float tours the streets of Middleton throughout December delivering Father Christmas to the children of Middleton and collecting valuable funds which are distributed to Middleton good causes early in the New Year.

Last year The Rotary Club of Middleton raised a record £6,506 for local charities and community groups from their door-to-door Father Christmas and Sainsbury collections.

Through this fund raising Rotary Middleton have helped numerous organisations in the past including local football teams, projects to tackle loneliness and isolation, community gardens along with gymnastics and trampolining clubs.
