Wooden setts on King Street to be uncovered following campaign

Date published: 10 October 2015

The wooden setts on King Street are to be uncovered following a campaign by Rochdale Artists.

John Cooke, who launched the campaign, said: “I am very pleased at the decision.”

It is believed that the setts were originally put down because there used to be a small hospital on King Street and staff didn’t want to disturb patients with the noise of horse and carriages on stone cobbles.

John added: “I noticed them about five weeks ago because you can see them through the tarmac and it got me thinking ‘who else has these’ and I don’t think there are many other places, so that is what really got me going. I have also recently heard that school children are being taken to have a look a look at them as well, so that is nice to hear.”

A petition set up for people to support the plan received over 200 signatures.

“We had a lot of support from people so that was good. We were really pleased with the support and I have now shut the petition down because the campaign has been deemed successful,” said John.

It is understood that closing the road, exposing the wooden cobbles and preserving them in a way that gives them adequate protection from any damage is currently being investigated.
