National Grid billed by Middleton resident Chris Burton
Date published: 12 October 2015
Middleton resident Chris Burton was left so frustrated with National Grid following roadworks outside of his house, that he eventually filled in the hole himself – and sent National Grid the bill.
Mr Burton states that he was unable to move his car from his driveway on Kingsway, Middleton after National Grid dug a hole on his neighbour’s property. Mr Burton states that his car was trapped for five days as the hole prevented him from leaving his drive.
Following numerous complains, Mr Burton decided to fill the hole with soil and is now charging the utility company £688.20 for the labour.
A spokesperson for National Grid said: “The excavation was not on Mr Burton’s property, it was on his neighbour’s property and on the public footpath. We were on schedule to complete the work at the neighbouring house and to fill in the hole within our standards of service.
“We believe Mr Burton could have moved his car off his driveway. We are not going to pay his bill for labour.”
