Date published: 13 October 2015

Deeplish Community Centre organised a Health Awareness Day as part of celebration and to mark World Mental Health Day on 10 October.

Dr Afzal Hussain, a GP in Bury who has also served as heart specialist internationally, delivered the lecture and answered questions about healthy life styles and how to become more active and healthy.

Dr Hussain covered the long term effects of diabetes and gave detailed information and background information as what happens if we ignore health advice, and covered signs and symptoms for diabetes and other common illnesses.

He also gave detailed advice on underlying issues affecting general health, especially related to poor and unhealthy diets and a lack of exercise, cholesterol, coronary heart diseases, and blood pressure, and detailed information on health and heart functions and the importance of having healthy food and a balanced diet.

Dr Hussain said: “It was very interesting to see people asking questions about their wellbeing and serious about learning and improving their own health.”

Sohail Ahmad, manager at Deeplish Community Centre, said: “Mental health and physical health make up key part of our general health and well-being and we are committed to providi information, awareness and opportunities for local communities to partake in our regular health related awareness sessions at the centre.”
