Arson attack on Edmund Street, Rochdale

Date published: 23 November 2015

A suspected arsonist went into a house on Edmund Street and set the sofa in the living room on fire between 10pm and 10.30pm on Wednesday 11 November. The smoke from the fire caused extensive damage to the rest of the house.

Police believe this was a targeted attack and have launched an investigation.

Police would like to speak to a man seen riding a bicycle in the area at the time of the incident. He is described as white, of stocky build and had a shaved head.

Detective Constable Russ Clarke of Rochdale division said: "It is unclear why this fire was started and who by. Fortunately, no-one was at home at the time of the fire, but it is in a row of houses where other people live.

"The fire took hold very quickly and if it wasn't for the diligence of local residents, it would without doubt have spread throughout the address and to the adjacent properties.

"I am particularly interested to speak to the man seen on a bicycle in the area around the time of the arson attack.

“If anybody saw the man or if you know who he is, please contact us. If you are the man described please get in touch as I you may have seen something important to our investigation.”

“I also want to remind people of the importance of having a fully functional fire alarm in your home address, which can mean the difference between damage to your property and a tragic loss of life."

Anyone with information should phone police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
