A man is critically ill in hospital after crashing his car into a tree on Heywood Old Road near Birch on Sunday morning.

The emergency services attended and police established that a silver Kia Rio had collided with a tree and the 50-year-old driver, who was trapped inside vehicle, sustained serious, possibly life-threatening, injuries.

Fire crews cut the man free and paramedics took him to North Manchester General Hospital.

Having undegone surgery, the man's condition is described as being critical.
