Lib Dem Councillor slams leak of email
Date published: 09 January 2008
Liberal Democrat Councillor Elwyn Watkins has slammed the leaking of a sensitive email concerning race relations in Rochdale. Councillor Watkins commented: "I wrote this email in order to alert a handful of senior Council Officers and Councillors to the danger of increased racial tensions. Rochdale is rightly proud of its generally good community relationships and part of this is due to people putting party politics aside and co-operating on behalf of the town. I am sorry that this was not the case on this occasion. Whoever leaked this memo has put party politics ahead of community relations."
Councillor Watkins went on to say: "I am particularly upset that the leaking of this email has distracted people from what is the main issue. This is the preservation of the services at Syke Community Base. These are used by hundreds of people on a weekly basis and users come from all over north Rochdale in order to use them."
The issue of Syke Base is due to be discussed at Rochdale township this evening (Town Hall 6pm) where many of the users from young children to elderly ladies are expected to turn out in force. All members of the public are welcome and people will be able to express their views to Councillors and Council Officers.
