MMC Estates thanked for clean up

Date published: 12 March 2008

Following the removal of the grot spots on the former TBA site beside Rooley Moor Road there was a call at the Spotland Area Forum for a vote of thanks to MMC Estates for their clean up.

"MMC staff have done a good job in cleaning up the long standing grot spots. A huge amount of accumulated litter and fly tipping was removed last week. Even though it is now a legal requirement for landowners to do this under the Cleaner Neighbourhoods and Environment Act, it would be churlish not to give credit when it is due.

It is now up to the local community to play its part to ensure that littering and fly tipping is controlled".

Rochdale Council officers have inspected land adjoining the entrance to Woodlands Road/Rooley Moor Road that was purchased by the council in 2001. Under the Cleaner Neighbourhoods and Environment Act, local authorities do not appear to have the same legal responsibilities to clear litter from land that private landowners do. However, removal 'grot spots' are a council priority in that they do affect the quality of life for those communities affected by such blight.

Questions were also asked at the Forum as to why Rochdale Council purchased a small section of the former entrance to the Turners asbestos factory site in 2001.
