Local actress stars in film to be shown at Cannes film festival

‘Titans of Newark’, a film starring Rochdale actress Amanda Fleming, has been accepted at Cannes film festival and will be screened to festival goers over the 12 day festival.

The film, which is a 30 minute comedy film, tells the story of the Greek Gods who fear they have lost the power that they used to have over the human race. To prove to Poseidon that Zeus still has what it takes he chooses one human at random to make bend to his whim.

Amanda plays Hera in the film and said: “It was amazing to be a part of this film and to work with the likes of Joel Brooks. I was the only British actress to audition for the film so it was great to work with so many American actors.”

Amanda left acting school in 1995 and has been working in theatre, radio, TV and film ever since. She added: “Out of acting school, I spent a lot of time working in theatre and doing radio plays and then when I went out to America, once I got my name out there I started to do bits in TV and film.”

‘Titans of Newark’ began filming in 2012 and was completed in early 2013. “After the film was completed we started sending it out to all of the film festivals and trying our best to get it out there because it is something we are all incredibly proud of,” added Amanda.

The film has since gone on to win Best Humour Film at San Diego Comic Con as well as a number of other awards. Amanda said: “Comic Con is the biggest film festival in America so to have the film screened there and to have it win was great for us.”

‘Titans of Newark’ will now be screened as part of the short film festival at Cannes with Amanda heading to the festival to be the films European representative. “With it being part of the short film festival, it will be screened every day so I have to be out there to tell people when it will be shown. It will be a lot of work and not just fun and games,” added Amanda.

As for what the future holds, Amanda hopes the film brings success for her and the director. She said: “I hope it gives recognition to the production company and the director Michael Marino because he was fantastic. As for me, I just hope it gets my face out there a little bit more so people start to know who I am.”
