SSV after six years: We are not going away

The Save Spodden Valley (SSV) group their 6th anniversary earlier this month (June 2010), and campaigner Jason Addy says insists that they have no plans to stop.

“We are resilient and we are not going away. The issue is that important. We want a safer future for future generations.”

SSV continues to campaign against plans to build housing on the Turner Brother’s site, once home to the largest asbestos factory of the world.

Addy condemned the above plans as “sick” and emphasised that the group will continue to push for a Community Plan B, which would create a “green lung” for Rochdale on and around the former Turner's site to make it a permanent and safe area of memorial woodland and recreation land.

“We are pushing for a safe, viable alternative that will create future jobs and security.”

In its six years, the SSV has been mentioned on Prime Minister’s Question Time and BBC documentaries. Campaigners also set up the first memorial in the country for asbestos victims.
