Rochdale 0 - 1 Bury

Date published: 06 December 2015

Rochdale went out of the FA Cup at the second round stage after a narrow defeat by local rivals Bury at Spotland. Danny Rose’s glancing header in the opening 10 minutes saw Bury progress to the third round.

A close game with a fiery atmosphere was predicted and that’s exactly what we got as Dale manager Keith Hill came up against his best friend and former assistant, Bury manager Dave Flitcroft.

Rochdale came out of the blocks very quickly but found themselves behind in the eighth minute, a set piece again proving Dale’s Achilles heel. Chris Hussey’s perfect delivery was glanced home by Danny Rose from just six yards to send the travelling fans into raptures.

Daler esponded well, James Hooper warming the hands of Bury keeper Daniel Bachmann; Donal McDermott fired agonisingly wide from 18 yards.

Joel Castro Pereira saved well from Leon Clarke, the closest Bury came to adding to their lead.

Last season’s leading scorer Ian Henderson had a glorious opportunity to draw Dale level when he benefited from a lucky ricochet inside the area but fired horribly over the bar from six yards out.

Dale finished the first half the stronger of the two teams but couldn’t find a way through.

Henderson forced Bachmann into a good save as the half time whistle approached.

The second half didn’t see too many goal mouth opportunities with Bury happy to sit back and soak up any Dale pressure.

John O’Sullivan saw his swerving shot flash over the bar from 30 yards.

Hooper was well marshalled when played in by Henderson as the Bury defence snuffed out any danger.

Leon Clarke had the ball in the net midway through the second half, the assistant’s flag cut short any celebrations.

Deep into stoppage time, Jim McNulty’s quick feet gave him space to turn but his shot flew over the bar.
