Boro under 10s take Huddersfield by storm

Date published: 18 April 2016

Littleborough Rugby Union Club Under 10s more than matched up to some large clubs as they demonstrated some terrific rugby in the 2016 Under 10s Huddersfield festival.

On frosty morning following the evening snow, Littleborough stepped out into the Huddersfield RUFC festival looking to repeat the heroics of last year when the boys at U9s level became known as the best defensive team.

As it is a festival rather than a tournament there are no outright winners or prizes just bragging rights and the chance to practice and hone the skills learnt at training for the juniors.

This weekend's event provided stiff opposition for the Boro u10s with teams from Huddersfield, Old Brodelians, Scunthorpe, Preston Grasshoppers, Sheffield and Baildon.

Some are semi-professional clubs with large academy numbers and high quality training facilities. However, you would have never guessed that there was a gulf in clubs as Littleborough finished with an unbeaten near perfect record, winning six out of seven games and drawing the other, conceding just two tries in the whole tournament.

A fantastic performance from a hardworking and cohesive unit that did coaches Paul Deacon, Gary Keegan, Kevin Deegan and the club proud.

First up for Boro was a match up against hosts Huddersfield and Littleborough put to bed some early nerves coming out on top by three tries to one.

Next up was tough opposition from Old Brodelians and while Boro spent the whole game camped on Brodelians line, they were held at bay resulting in no score draw.

Scunthorpe were making their bow at the Huddersfield RUFC festival and were new opposition that Boro had never faced before. They were despatched with consummate ease with a rather one-sided four tries to one victory.

After a short break, the hosts second team, Huddersfield Gold, were next to try and topple a now confident Littleborough side but were too put to the sword by some excellent simple rugby, the score finishing at four to nil.

Boro now getting into their stride, beat South Yorkshire powerhouse Sheffield with the biggest score of the day eight nil, then Baildon six nil in a similar fashion.

No team could cope with the Littleoborugh fast tempo, hard game plan that mixed brute strength with some exquisite technical play.

Last up for Boro was Preston Grasshoppers, another big club, but the biggest in Lancashire could not stop the Boro freight train finishing the game seven tries to nil.
