The Rochdale Hornets Sporting Foundation has partnered with the Armed Forces Covenant Fund in order to set up a wheelchair rugby league club as part of Rochdale Hornets family.

The main aim is for the wheelchair club to integrate local veterans with the wheelchair community and rugby league in Rochdale to create a strong network.

Hornets Chairman, Mark Wynn added, “We are really proud that the Hornets family continues to grow.

“Rochdale Hornets and rugby league have always been about being inclusive; I don't think there will be many other professional sports clubs with a men’s, women’s and wheelchair teams.

“I for one can't wait to see the Rochdale Hornets wheelchair team get started and I am sure they will wear the red, white and blue with pride.”

Councillor Richard Farnell, leader of Rochdale Borough Council said: “Rochdale Hornets and the Borough’s armed forces family play an important part within our community for different reasons. Bringing the two together will mean veterans unable to participate in sporting activities, especially team events, will be able to participate. It will allow able and disabled veterans to be a part of a team and to represent the Borough in sporting events.”

Councillor Alan McCarthy, lead member armed forces, commented: “The Rochdale Hornets wheelchair rugby team will enable disabled and abled bodied veterans to be part of a team.”
