Norden win the inaugural Pennine Cricket League Charity Cup

The charity match between Norden CC and Saddleworth CC gets under way

Norden, last year’s CLL champions, beat Saddleworth, who finished top of the Saddleworth League, in the inaugural Pennine Cricket League Charity Cup.

Saddleworth won the toss and decided to take first knock, although it wasn’t much of a knock by skipper Brian Lord who was bowled by the pacy Chris Hartley three balls in.

Hartley had Danny Hesford caught by Greg Tattersall, and Darren Shadford had his stumps rattled to make it 19 for three.

The innings never picked up, and Hartley was unlucky not to pick up a fourth wicket when a chance was put down behind the stumps.

The dangerous Imran Aslam made his way to 16, but a lofted shot off Hashum Malik and a catch taken falling backwards by Simon North spelt the end for the professional.

Catches by Ashley Gowers accounted for James Howard and Nauman Akram.

Michael Price bowled Ben Pollard and Bradley Hadfield as they both tried to swing him to leg.

Rehan Udwadia took a hard hit return catch off Daniel Poole.

Jack Duffy wrapped up the innings by bowling Ryan McGrath.

A total of 103 was never going to be challenging, and Norden had 64 on the board by the time Michael Price was stumped for 30.

Harvey Fitton went leg before for six, but Rehan Udwadia, who opened the innings with Price, batted superbly.

The Lancashire Academy player hit an unbeaten classy 48, while Ash Gowers managed a couple of hard hit boundaries in his 12 before victory was achieved.

So Norden picked up the Charity Cup.

Proceeds will go to the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young in memory of Tom Hardman, and it is hoped to make the charity cup match an annual event possibly between league champions and cup winners.
