Mayfield 54 - 6 Dudley Hill

Date published: 30 April 2016

Mayfield coasted through to the second round of the Conference Challenge Cup at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Wednesday night in blizzard conditions more reminiscent of the old winter rugby season than the modern day summer game.

The tries came thick and fast just like the snow and the game was effectively over before half time. Credit to Dudley though as they never gave up the fight, keeping going right up till the end.

The final score of 54 - 6 was a fair reflection of the game tries coming from Lewis Sheridan (2), Rhys Carruth(2), Sam Butterworth(2), and Sean Snape, Sean Mulcahy, Nick Hargreaves and Aidy Gleeson all scoring one each; Gleeson also tagged on a conversion while Butterworth slotted over six.

Conditions dictated the style of play and though Mayfield attempted to move the ball in the end they relied on the pack to wear down the dogged Dudley Hill defence.

Lewis Sheridan had another strong game at full back and Sean Snape and Rhys Carruth made telling contributions.

In the forwards Nick Hargreaves went well at prop and was ably supported by Sean Mulcahy Aidy Gleeson.

Mention must also go to Mark Biggins who for a twenty minute spell was absolutely awesome in his defence taking down anything that moved with a ferocity in the tackle that is often missing these days.
