West Hull 18 – 24 Rochdale Mayfield

Date published: 06 June 2016

Mayfield have had their troubles on the road this season, especially in Hull, where they came up with their worst performance for some time when losing to Dockers a few weeks ago, but Matt Callands men turned that around to gain two valuable league points, and keep touch with the top of the division, with a spirited victory.

Mayfield started well and fluent attack and strong defence gave a 0 – 18 half time lead with tries through Lewis Sheridan, Jack Sampson and Aidan Gleeson, all converted by Sam Butterworth.

After the break Mayfield relaxed and allowed West Hull back into the game, and indeed they levelled the scores with only two minutes remaining.

However, Mayfield did not settle for a point, they re-gathered a short kick off and drove to the posts for the chance at a drop goal. That’s what everyone on the ground thought anyway – all except Declan Sheridan, who had other ideas and, on play four, dummied at the play the ball and shot through the gap to score the winning try. Sam Butterworth again converted for a well deserved win.

Mayfield Team; Lewis Sheridan. Jack Sampson, Reece Carruth, Matt Calland, Rob Kershaw. Chris Hough, Sam Butterworth. Aidan Gleeson, Callum Ogden, Nick Hargreaves, Callum Marriott, Sean Watkins, Paul Brearley. Jack Rush, Seta Tala, Declean Sheridan, Liam Whalley.

Mayfield return to action at home this Saturday against York Acorn, 2.30pm kick off.
