Mayfield Preview

Date published: 17 June 2016

Mayfield take a break from league action on Saturday as they take on Saddleworth in the second round of the NCL Challenge Trophy.

This should be a cracker of a game with Mayfield out for revenge after losing out to Saddleworth in the final of the Oldham Standard cup in April in a fiercely contested match.

Mayfield go into this one as the form team having put together a six game winning run but as the Standard Cup game proved, form counts for nothing when old rivalries come into play.

Saddleworth play their rugby in the second division of the Conference and are having a decent season so far being firmly rooted in the play-off positions.

Mayfield have established themselves in the elite premier division and after a somewhat shaky start are just beginning to achieve some sort of form.

Team selection will be a headache for the coaches with players reporting back fit but this is always a nice problem for a coach and Calland and Butterworth will select a side they see fit for what is going to be a physical encounter.

The NWML side are in derby day action against Oldham rivals, away to Oldham St Anne's, in a Division Two fixture both sides are in the bottom half of the table and are looking for points so they can begin to rise up the league.

Like the NCL sides game this expected to be a tough afternoon for the lads and nothing more than 100% will be given on the pitch.

Fixtures 18-06-16

NCL Cup: Mayfield v Saddleworth - kick off 2.30pm
NWML Division Two: St Anne's v Mayfield - kick off 2.30pm
