Lock Lane 24 – 32 Mayfield

Date published: 27 June 2016

The start of this game set the tone for the first half as Mayfield failed to gather the kick off conceded a forty twenty then a penalty and allowed the opposition in for a try under the sticks despite there being three tacklers attempting to bring the scorer to ground. All this in the first four minutes and the travelling support was in shock as the Lane kicker slotted over the conversion.

Both sides were guilty of simple unforced errors and chances were there to be taken. Mayfield steadied the ship on the back of some good possession with Gaz Ellison and Callum Marriott working hard for the team and when Sam Butterworth threw a long cut out pass to Rob Kershaw the winger showed his years of experience as he eased over the line to narrow the gap.

Mayfield enjoyed a good spell with Rhys Carruth, Callum Marriott and Aidy Gleeson all making telling breaks.

Sam Butterworth made the most of good ball from Callum Ogden as he put Callum Marriott in under the posts.

It took some resolute defence from the home side to keep the Mayfield forwards out but they were up to the task with some strong aggressive tackling which left Mayfield frustrated.

Lane began to turn the tide after the mistakes began to creep back into the Mayfield game and they seemed to lose their structure.

Lane upped the pace and Mayfield were caught out as they scored two tries in four minutes to regain the lead before half time.

Only a minute before the whistle Mayfield were again pressing the line and looked like scoring but another mistake allowed Lane to break into the Mayfield twenty where the referee awarded them a penalty - the kicker duly slotted it over to increase the lead at the break to 18 – 10.

The first twenty minutes of the second half saw Mayfield looking a bit out of sorts and they did well to hold Lane out as they threw everything at the Mayfield line. They were lucky not to concede a score as Dec Sheridan attempted a quick play the ball only to find there was nobody at acting half to receive the ball a quick scramble saw the ball go dead. This could well have been the game changer, if Lane had scored at that point it could have been a bridge too far for Mayfield. This positively schoolboy error seemed to shock Mayfield out of their second half lethargy.

Lewis Sheridan injected himself more into the game, Si Moore and Paul Brearley became more prominent and with more good ball coming through Ogden and Hough it was just a matter of time before they capitalised and when Sam Butterworth worked a piece of individual magic to touch down under the posts Mayfield were back in contention. The conversion made the score 18 – 16.

A penalty for a high tackle gave Mayfield the opportunity to slot the ball over for a two pointer to level the scores.

Calland continued to turn the screw as he made a brilliant break before handing the ball on to Carruth who was unstoppable from thirty metres Hough added the extras and Mayfield were back in front.

Hough then slotted over another penalty after a high tackle on Lewis Sheridan.

Flying aussie Carruth effectively sealed the game with three minutes to go as he intercepted and raced forty metres. Butterworth kicked the conversion.

Lock Lane's never say die attitude was rewarded as their winger managed to squeeze in in the corner for the final converted score.

It was a comfortable win in the end for Mayfield but there wasn’t much in this one. If Lane had got the important first score of the second half it could have been a different story, however, Mayfield came away with an important victory and another two points.

The Lock Lane coaching staff gave Lewis Sheridan man-of-the-match.
