Roper returns to Hornets

Date published: 15 July 2016

The vastly experienced Steven Roper has signed a deal to return to Spotland Stadium following his release by Oldham Roughyeds.

Roper, who played 84 times for Hornets between 2009 and 2014, is a vastly experienced half back.

He left Hornets early in 2014 after playing a pivotal part in the club's promotion season of 2013.

He cemented his place with Oldham and was again instrumental in the Roughyeds team that won promotion in 2015.

He has played 49 games for Oldham, winning man-of-the-match against Hornets in the Law Cup fixture as well as in the shock Challenge Cup victory away at Hull KR.

Hornets coach, Alan Kilshaw said: “I have coached Steve before so we all know what we are getting.

“We brought in Ryan Maneely to add some competition for places but then we have lost Alex McClurg due to his off field commitments.

“When Steve got in touch with Ryan (Bradley) we were obviously interested but it’s well publicised the tight budget we operate to.

“Ropes has been great, he has negotiated with Oldham his release and is coming to us knowing he has some work to do to get in, but he is up for the challenge and will add depth and experience in the pivot department.”

It’s been a busy week for Hornets on the transfer front, as the club looks to finalise the squad ahead of the 24 July deadline.

Ryan Maneely has signed a season long extension to his loan deal, although Halfiax do have the right to recall at 48 hours’ notice.

Harry Cartwright has penned a deal until the end of the season following a successful trial period and will be available from late July when his suspension finishes.

Discussions with partner club Warrington Wolves, who are still in the Challenge Cup, have gone up a notch as the decision on who will be available for the remainder of the season is made.

The conclusion of these discussions may mean that further additions are needed to see Hornets home in the final run in.
