Littleborough’s Nicola White in Olympic semi-finals with woman’s hockey team

Date published: 16 August 2016

Littleborough hockey player Nicola White reached the semi-finals of the Olympic games on Monday (15 August) as part of Great Britain’s woman’s hockey team.

Great Britain comfortably beat Spain 3-1 in their quarter-final match to set up a semi-final tie with New Zealand on Wednesday (17 August) at 9.00pm.

Nicola was included in the starting team against Spain but was taken off shortly before Great Britain’s first goal – a Georgie Twigg penalty corner in the eighth minute.

However, she was back on when Helen Richardson-Walsh doubled the advantage in the 12th minute and Lily Owsley got Great Britain’s third after 27 minutes.

Spain pulled one back through Georgina Oliva in the 53rd minute, but Great Britain’s first half dominance was enough to see them through to the last four.

After winning bronze at the London 2012 games, Great Britain will hope to go one better this time by beating New Zealand to reach the final, where they will face Germany or the Netherlands.
