Nicola White is guaranteed to win another Olympic medal

Date published: 18 August 2016

Nicola White of Littleborough is guaranteed to win another Olympic medal this summer as part of the Great Britain women’s hockey team after they beat New Zealand 3-0 on Wednesday (17 August) to reach the final.

Great Britain were tested against New Zealand and held a narrow one goal advantage until the final quarter, but two further goals ensured that Nicola and her teammates will win at least an Olympic silver medal after the bronze success from London 2012.

Alex Danson scored Great Britain’s first from a penalty corner in the 22nd minute before Helen Richardson-Walsh doubled the advantage three minutes inside the final quarter. Danson scored her second shortly after to make sure of the victory.

Great Britain will now face the Netherlands – a side who have won the last two women’s Olympic hockey tournaments – in the gold medal match on Friday (19 August).

Nicola and her teammates have made history by defeating New Zealand. Great Britain have won two bronze medals in women’s hockey at the Olympics hockey in the past, but this will be the first time ever that they have gone one step further and reached the final itself.
