Sally Tisdall to row Boston Marathon

Date published: 14 September 2016

Sally Tisdall is set to row the 50km Boston Marathon on Sunday (18 September) to raise funds for the Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club.

This will be her first time rowing on her own as she has previously taken part in 2014 and 2015 as part of a quad team.

In 2015, Sally’s team won with the fastest time for her age category.

Sally, 15, has been a member of the rowing club for four years and captains the Hollingworth Academy School rowing team. She has trained five times per week, at Hollingworth Lake when the weather conditions have been suitable and using rowing machines when they have not.

The Boston Marathon takes place on the River Ouse, with 134 rowers beginning at Titanic Bridge and ending at Boston Rowing Club.
Sally will be the fifth competitor to set off at 9.17am and is looking at finishing approximately five and a half hours later.

Her mum, Victoria Scholes, said: “Sally is looking forward to the challenge and is hoping to make the club and her family proud of her.

“She spends so much time at the club that she calls it her second home.”

Fellow club member, Molly Archbold, is also competing as a single on Sunday in order to raise money for MIND, the mental health charity. Both Sally and Molly will be the youngest to row in a single this year following the minimum age changing to 15.

Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club captain Ian John has estimated roof repairs at over £33,000 pounds. Following the success of Team GB’s Olympic rowing teams, the club is also experiencing many people interested in the sport. Equipment costs range from £200 pounds for an oar to £15,000 for a quad.
