Mayfield preview

Date published: 29 September 2016

Mayfield begin their bid for the NCL Premier division crown on Saturday when they entertain Cumbrian side Wath Brow Hornets at the Mayfield Sports Centre.

Mayfield wound up their season proper last week with a great win over current champions Leigh Miners, that saw them cement the fourth spot and a home tie against the team finishing in fifth place who are Saturday's opponents.

Brow went down to near neighbours Kells in a tough bruising encounter which saw them lose out in the final seconds of the game after leading from early in the first half.

The two teams have shared the honours this season in the league games, both winning their respective fixtures so a tight game is expected today. Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth take their team into this game confident that if they play to their potential they should have enough to progress to the next round.

That said Butterworth knows that Brow are a quality side and is under no illusions that this will be anything less than a very tough game.

“The Cambrians will come with a big set of forwards as they always do and two good half backs. We are aware of their strengths and in light of that we have had the lads in for an extra training session this week.

“We are absolutely buzzing at the prospect of this game and will be giving it our all to get through to the next game.”

There are two other games on Saturday in the play-offs with Siddal versus West Hull and Leigh Miners versus Wigan St Pats.

The winners of Mayfield's game will play the winners of the Leigh Miners game on the 15 October.
