Rugby League: Hornets visit Oldham Roughyeds in the Law Cup

Date published: 08 November 2016

Rochdale Hornets will travel to Bower Fold on Sunday 22 January to take on local rivals Oldham Roughyeds in the 2017 Law Cup fixture.

After a three-year sabbatical, the traditional pre-season fixture returned last year in a contest which Oldham ran out comfortable winners, registering a 12-29 win in which they scored three tries in just nine minutes to put them out of reach.

On that day there were three current Hornets wearing Oldham colours; Jack Holmes, Lewis Palfrey and Josh Crowley.

Hornets head coach Alan Kilshaw said: “It’s great that we can get this game on for the supporters of both clubs. It’s one of the fiercest rivalries in rugby league.

"Last season we were hugely disappointed with how we performed on the day and this time we will be looking to give a much better account of ourselves. It will give us a good measure to see where we are at against a quality Oldham outfit and Championship opposition.”

Hornets will also play a friendly against another close neighbour in Salford, which will kick off the club's warm up programme.

Kilshaw says the two fixtures will give the players and the coaching staff a good idea of where they are up to in their preparations for the season.

He added: “The Law Cup game will be our second hit out of the year. We’ll get a chance to look at the lads the week before when we take on Salford and we will be able to change some things up for the Oldham game. It’ll be a good test for the lads and will be good preparation ahead of the season. I’ve got to thank officials from both clubs for getting this game on, it’s going to be a big one.”

Rochdale Hornets Chairman, Mark Wynn, said: “It’s an exciting season as for the first time in over a decade both ourselves and Oldham are in the second tier of the rugby league pyramid, so the standard will be incredibly high and certainly one both sets of fans will enjoy seeing.”
