Boxing: Abdul Khan causes a storm on another busy weekend for Hamer Boxing Club

Date published: 29 November 2016

Abdul Khan caused a storm when he beat Joe Farrugia of Tameside Elite Boxing Club at the Cresta Court Hotel, Altringham on Friday 25 November.

Khan, 12, came out for the first-round throwing fast combinations to the head of his opponent while Farrugia tried to match Khan with similar punches.

It was a fast start for both boxers which made for a terrific contest but towards the end of the round Khan began to take over as he continued to land swift punches to the head before stepping out of range.

In round two Farrugia came out with a tight and compact guard as he began to work to the body of Khan.

Farrugia was edging back into the contest until he stepped back to inform the referee that his head guard had become loose. This significant moment changed the momentum of the round and when both boxers where told to continue the Hamer youngster began to take control again as he continuously stormed in and out of range while throwing a hail of punches to the head of his opponent.

In the third round Farrugia began to show signs of tiredness, which allowed Khan to breeze in and out of range as he continued to pelt his opponent with numerous combinations.

A unanimous verdict went in Khan's favour.

The bout was such a terrific contest, with both boxers showing very good and mature skills, it was decided that they should meet again two days later on Sunday 27 November on Farrugia's own show at Dukinfield Masonic Hall.

In another cracking contest, which closed the show, Khan gained another unanimous verdict to take the contest for the second time in two days.

Also on the Tameside show was 13-year-old Adam Earnshaw who continues to show skills and maturity beyond his age when he used outstanding footwork along with fast hand and head movement to beat Declan Dee of Spartan ABC.

On the same Tameside show 12-year-old young hopeful Sarhan Khan lost with a credible performance against the much bigger Wayde Griffin, also of Spartan ABC.

Two Hamer girls, 14-year-old Jude English and 17-year-old Bethany Connellan travelled all the way down to Millwall, London in a six hour journey on Saturday (26 November) only to come home after such a long and arduous day with defeats on their records.

Hamer head coach Steven Connellan said: "It was another busy weekend for our club.

"We are so proud of all our boxers who show a terrific attitude and a willingness to box anywhere, whether they win or lose. This historic boxing club is never afraid of defeats. That's why we strive to get our youngsters out boxing every weekend in order to gain that much-needed experience which they are going to require if they are going to succeed in this sport.

"I have to mention young Sarhan Khan, who came to this club seriously over weight but has shown a great attitude while working to reduce that poundage and still is.

"The girls showed great dedication in having to also lose weight for their contests in London. It was an arduous task set for them right from the beginning up until they arrived after such a long journey yet, like all of our youngsters, they showed a great and unique attitude."
