Boxing: Victory for Grant Kershaw

Date published: 19 December 2016

Grant Kershaw travelled to club 147 in Walkden and beat Haseeb Khan of Halliwell Boxing Club.

The bell rang for the first round and Kershaw, of Hamer Boxing Club, immediately took the centre of the ring to unload a continuous bombardment of punches to Khan's head, which forced his opponent onto the ropes.

Kershaw continued to unload punches until Khan moved in close to tie his relentless antagonist up to give him some much-needed respite.

In round two Khan came back into the fight when he stood his ground and tried to match Kershaw with his own aggressive punches.

The all action bout had the crowd cheering as both boys stood in the centre of the ring unloading power punches.

As the round progressed Kershaw adapted and he began to move slightly out of range of his opponent to make Khan miss before stepping back into range to offload punches of his own that constantly found their target.

Both boxers began to tire in the third and last round, but both still impressed with their non-stop action.

Kershaw took the centre of the ring again and as he forced his opponent back onto the ropes to unload more telling punches, Khan ducked his head slightly to make the Hamer youth miss before trying to return punches of his own.

A gallant effort from Khan but he had absorbed to many punches to the head from Kershaw who had his arm raised as the worthy winner by unanimous decision.

Hamer ABC head coach Steven Connellan said: "Grant is a new boxer to this club and he is still getting to grips with our training methods and the way we want him to box. We expect good things from this young man and this win will help him settle in more quickly and hopefully he will move on from here and achieve his potential.”
