Smithy Bridge win Hornets tag tournament

Date published: 21 December 2016

Smithy Bridge were the winners of a tag tournament hosted by Rochdale Hornets’ Sporting Foundation at St Mary’s Middleton RC.

Seven teams of pupils from year five and six competed, with the top four at the end of the tournament competing in a play-off for the two spaces up for grabs in the Winter Games in the new year.

Smithy Bridge beat St James CE in their play-off, while St Mary’s year six defeated Hopwood to claim the final spot and progress.

St Mary’s had a team from year five who competed, while Milnrow Parish and St Edward’s CE also took part.

Community coach Michael Ratu was delighted with the success of the tournament and was happy to see the pupils enjoy the evening.

He said: “It was a great day and the best thing about it all was seeing the kids having fun.

“That’s what this foundation is all about, getting young people into the sport and enjoying it and when we put together successful events like this one it makes everything worthwhile.

“Congratulations to all of the schools who competed and we are looking forward to seeing the two qualifiers in the Winter Games.”

The Foundation said it would like to thank St Mary’s Middleton for hosting the event and will be releasing details of the Winter Games in the New Year.
