Rochdale Lacrosse junior girls’ team win first ever match

Date published: 20 February 2017

The new Rochdale Lacrosse junior girls’ team won their first ever match on Saturday (18 February) 10 - 4 in an away match against opposition from Liverpool.

The girls will play the reverse fixture in a few weeks' time at Rochdale Cricket Lacrosse and Squash Club and will be looking to build on their early success.

The club formed the girls’ junior team in September after months of hard work from club local development officer, Chris Birchenough and girls' coach, Kerrie Lawler.

Mr Birchenough said: “We as a club really want to grow our youth teams so we can get more players through in the future; the club has relied on a few family dynasties for a long time. Some of the girls are the daughters and granddaughters of our men’s team and we’ve also had two girls come over from Bolton. We’ve had about ten girls come from local schools over the last three months too.

“We’re hoping to take on as many new players as we can to split the teams by age. As it stands, there are no age limits on girls’ lacrosse in our current format.

“I’ve been doing coaching sessions at local primary schools and Kerrie has been developing those kids on Saturday mornings. I’m going to be doing the same at two local high schools in the coming weeks, Matthew Moss, and potentially, Oulder Hill.

!New players are welcome to come down to the club on Saturdays at 10am for an hour of free coaching.

Rochdale Lacrosse Club invite anyone who wants to have a go or get involved to contact them on 07443 484 389 for boys or 07811 336 823 for girls."

The contact team sport has been played in Rochdale since 1888, making it one of the oldest worldwide. The club is one of the five eldest clubs in the UK, and one of the top 20 worldwide.
