Rugby Union: Southport RUFC 37 - 46 Littleborough RUFC

A high scoring match in the Lancashire Plate competition saw Southport score five tries but Littleborough progressed having scored seven tries with four converted.

Southport opened the scoring when a run up the right wing resulted in a successful penalty kick.

Littleborough hit back with winger David Kearns crossing the try line, but no conversion.

Southport has a second penalty success before Littleborough crossed the line for their second try between the posts by Murphy Holt. Converted by Park.

Littleborough were quickly back on the attack with new centre threequarter, Alex West and partner Jack Whittles, followed by West kicking across field for Winger Kearns to drop on the ball as it as it rolled over the try line for his second try. No conversion.

Southport broke through the Littleborough back line for their first try of the afternoon, which they converted.

Littleborough captain Andy Bairstow was on form, his forward kick to touch was followed with Littleborough gaining ball and their threequarters were making good use of it, which materialised into another penalty to Littleborough - converted by West.

Southport hit back in the final moments of the first half to score their second try. No conversion.

Start of second half saw Littleborough’s second row, Ben Irving make a great break which was soon followed by winger Lloyd crossing for another Littleborough try. No conversion.

Before anyone could draw breath centre Jack Whittles made a great break and also went over for a try. Converted by Park.

Southport worked their way down to Littleborough’s 22 metres area where Whittles was noticeable with good strong tackle, which he quickly followed with a ball in hand break up the centre of the pitch for a solo try under the posts. Park with the easy conversion.

In the last quarter of the game Southport scored another try.

A cheeky kick resulted in Southport pegging Littleborough back further with another converted try.

Nearing the end of the match Littleborough’s winger touched down for yet another Littleborough try.

Southport completed the scoring with a converted try.

Littleborough welcome top of the league Carlisle next Saturday and after this performance it should be an exhilarating game.
