Cycling: East Lancs report

Date published: 04 July 2017

Steven Burke Circuit, Colne

Paul Ashworth rode the third/fourth category race to get warmed up and came a creditable sixth to earn four more points in his steady rise to second category status. He then joined Oliver Huszar and Ben Trippier in the E/1/2/3 race.

This race had the usual attempted breakaways which were all nullified by the bunch determined to not let the potential winner escape, but eventually perseverance paid off and two riders escaped off the front to secure the leading places with Ed Hopper taking the win.

Trippier, Huszar and Ashworth finished fourth, 15th and 21st in an uneventful night of racing for the club riders.

10 mile time trial

Manchester & District Ladies CA organised their 10 mile time trial on the J2/1 course in Cheshire. This course starts at Monks Heath Traffic lights and proceeds north west to Booths Hall near Knutsford, via Chelford and Ollerton and then the riders retrace back to the start.

There was a slight headwind going out to the turn which the riders had to contend with.

  • Roy Nield was fifth fastest in the men’s event with 23:17
  • Bill Howarth 25:19
  • Dave Trippier 25:35
  • Georgina Cape 26:06 - for a personal best on this course
  • Karen Bailey, 27:01
  • Jonny Decamps 28:28
  • Nicole Decamps (youth rider) 31:09  - a personal best

100 mile time trial

The Manchester & District TTA 100 mile time tria course was centred around the Jodrell Bank telescope in Cheshire. The weather was dry but there was a wind to contend with and racing 100 miles is never an easy challenge for the best of riders.

Club rider Mike Coulter has set himself a challenge for 2017 in riding every recognised distance which comprises time trials over distances or durations of 10 miles, 25 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles, 12 hours and finally 24 hours.

Having completed events at the two shorter distances it was the 100 mile event last Sunday. Coulter started well and got into a steady pace racing around the Cheshire lanes but having perhaps having started to fast, and not having eaten enough food early enough in the race, he ran out of energy at 70 miles and had to stop.

Not to be undaunted by this he goes again at 100 miles in two weeks’ time when he hopes to complete his first 100 mile TT.

Saturday Beginners Ride

The social rides continued at the weekend with the Saturday Beginners Ride turnout growing all the time and on Sunday the Car Assisted ride to Grassington drew out many riders for an enjoyable ride in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
