Rugby League: Mayfield preview

Date published: 06 July 2017

Mayfield take on Leigh Miners in a Kingstone Press National League Premier Division game on Saturday.

Miners have one of the best pedigrees in the country when it comes to amateur sport but they have had a torrid time this season winning only two of their games so far.

Mayfield coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth were happy with last week’s win at Egremont and are hoping to take the points this week and consolidate third spot.

Also, at home are the NWML side; they are looking to bounce back after a disappointing performance last week saw them go down at home to Chorley Panthers.

Saturday’s visitors are Wigan St Jude's; the two sides have already met twice this season with the spoils even.

Mayfield need to win f they want to keep a firm grip on the top spot in the division.

Marvin Connolly and Dave Harmer have worked the players hard this week letting them know they have to concentrate and play as a team for the full eighty.

It is also important they cut the cheap penalties and slack discipline to avoid giving away easy yards and easy possession.

There is a large squad to select from so the coaches will wait until Saturday to name their side.

A Mayfield spokesperson said: "Whatever happens on the field there is a guaranteed good time in the club afterwards with a race night organised by Pete Duffy in aid of the SG6 foundation.

"The first race is around 6.30pm and all are welcome so come along and help a great cause raise some money and have a fantastic time too.

"Mayfield Sports Centre it's the place to be."
