Rugby League: Mayfield preview

Date published: 20 July 2017

After last week’s rest Mayfield are back in action on Saturday in the Kingstone Press NCL Premier Division with a mouth-watering clash at Wigan St Pats.

St Pats have had a disappointing season so far by their high standards and lie in eighth place on nine points, behind Mayfield who are in fourth with 20 points.

They had a good win in the cup last week against Saddleworth and this could give them an advantage after Mayfield's week of inactivity.

Mayfield have showed flashes of brilliance this season with Paul Brearley, Dec Sheridan and Lewis Sheridan leading the way, while Aidan Gleeson, Jimmy Connaughton and Callum Ogden are proving to be three of the best forwards in the division. Full back Wayne English has settled into the side showing his class and proving a settling presence at the back.

Coaches Calland and Butterworth have worked the players hard this week, but realise the side must improve their discipline and cut the unforced errors to realise their full potential.

Dave Harmer and Marvin Connolly take their NWML side on the road, travelling to Widnes where they face fourth placed Widnes Tigers.

Tigers are having a decent season and will be a tough team to beat on their own ground but Mayfield go there full of confidence looking to pull further away from their challengers at the top of the table.

Their last game against Wigan St Jude was typical of their performance this season playing with skill and flair, refusing to bow down to the physical intimidation of bigger, more experienced teams.

Corey Newsham, Jordan Parr, James Ainley and Cole Connolly are settling into the side and playing well and Mayfield will travel hoping to bring back the points.
