Cricket: Wood Cup Final - match abandoned

Date published: 06 August 2017

The Wood Cup Final between Rochdale CC and Crompton CC was abandoned due to heavy rain on Sunday (6 August), and will now be replayed in a fortnight.

Rochdale captain Dale Highton chose to bat after winning the toss.

Rain initially stopped play with just a few overs of the Rochdale innings to complete.

The covers came off again and the rain abated just long enough for Crompton to pick off the Rochdale lower order batsmen, the final wicket falling in the final over. Crompton professional Akbar Rehman proved his worth taking four for 16 in a late burst as Rochdale tried to force the pace with their overs running out.

Rochdale had found runs hard to come by, but after a patient innings from Andrew Dawson, who made 50, they eventually scored 183 all out in 49.3 overs.

As the players retired to the pavilion for tea, the rain came again, and this time heavy and persistent; with no prospect of the heavy rain stopping, the game was abandoned.

The match will be re-played on Sunday 20 August, again at Middleton with a 1.00 pm start.
