Rugby League - Challenge Cup: Mayfield 28 - 0 Crosfields

Date published: 29 January 2018

BBC TV cameras were at Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday to record Mayfield progressing to the second round of the Challenge Cup at the expense of Crosfields.

Crosfield started the game strongly and their enthusiasm earned them a couple of early scoring chances, but the Mayfield defence was solid.

Mayfield began to take hold of the game but Crosfields soaked up the prolonged spell of pressure showing no sign of their lower league status.

Mayfield debutant Brandon Wood was bundled into touch after a pass from the impressive Matty Ashton had given him a scoring chance.

Within seconds Mayfield had regained possession when a tackle from Whalley and Paul Brearley dislodged the ball. Whalley drove the ball to the line and a quick play the ball allowed Dec Sheridan to bring Ady Gleeson back on the inside and he powered through three defenders for the opening score. Converted by Zac Hartley

Crosfields pushed back and pressured the Rochdale line but a soft penalty gave up possession. Zac Hartley punished them with a 40m kick turning a Crosfield attack in to a scrambling defence.

From the tap Ashton made yards and found Whalley with a short pass. Whalley looked like he would be stopped short but he forced his way over the try line. Hartley converted.

Mayfield's next try was an audacious one as Zac Baker kicked through from his own half on the first tackle. Ashton sprinted through to collect the ball and score out wide. Hartley missed the conversion.

Crosfields refused to yield and began to again threaten the Mayfield line but Zac Hartley read the play well as he stepped up and intercepted a pass. He then raced 90 metres but was just caught by the winger as he neared the line.

Two plays later 17-year-old Cole Connelly dummied his way over from half back for a try. Hartley slotted over the two.

Crosfields came back at Mayfield and only a concerted defensive effort kept them out, with Callum Marriott, Joe Schofield Kieran Harmer and Ady Gleeson standing strong.

Half time: Mayfield 22 - 0 Crosfields

The second half did not live up to the first.

Whatever the reason, the effort and determination shown by both sets of players could not be faulted as they plugged away at each other trying to find the chink in the armour that could either ignite a fight back for Crosfields or seal the game for Mayfield.

There were spells of good play but neither side managed to get any consistency with each attempt being snuffed out by tackle after tackle.

Fustrations began to show and Crosfields lost their number eight for ten minutes after he was sin binned for foul play.

Mayfield upped the pace and looked like they may produce something but a good effort from the twelve-man Crosfields held them at bay.

Mayfield' Brearley took a turn in the sin-bin after his side was placed on a team warning.

With time more or less up Zac Hartley picked up the ball from a scrum and passed to Dec Sheridan who ducked under the tackle to go over. Hartley slotted the two over to round of the scoring.

The game was sponsored by the SG6 foundation.

Mayfield are in the hat for round two which is drawn on Wednesday at 5.00pm streamed live on the BBC Sport web site, ties to be played 10/11 February.
