Rugby Union: Littleborough Thirds 61 - 7 Trafford MV Thirds

Date published: 26 March 2018

Littleborough moved one step closer to the Division Four East title with an impressive demolition of Trafford MV.

With five games left of the regular season and with an eight point lead, Littleborough could not afford to slip up at home with big games against promotion rivals Wilmslow and Glossop to come in the next two rounds of matches.

Littleborough put together a display of all round rugby, from fluid running rugby in attack and ferocious line speed and turnover rates in defence.

Scoring nine tries, Littleborough dramatically increased their points difference and capitalised on main rivals Glossop's shock defeat at the hands of Hope Valley.

Littleborough opened the scoring with an excellent try. Keeping possession whilst making significant yardage through a number of crash balls, the quick ball was fired out to the open spaces of the wing for Luke Carter to dive over.

Prop Matt Wild scored his first of two tries on a barnstorming run to the line. It was not long before he also took advantage of a quick tap penalty taken by Tom Travis and his significant frame to crash over from close range.

Another Boro star who can be very difficult to stop when in full flight is Jason Clegg and used all his brawn and brain to carve through Trafford on the way to another double.

Next on the scoresheet as Littleborough maintained their foot on the throttle was James Staniland who squirmed and spun his way to the try line.

Staniland's outside half partner Thomas Travis also got in on the act when he exchanged passes with Gareth Sharrocks, who had previously broken through the Trafford defensive line.

With the game sealed, Boro could have eased up but further tries from centre Gareth Sharrocks and second row James Muir took the points tally past the half century mark.

Littleborough are now in pole position at the top of the table with an eight point gap to Heaton Moor in second and a 12 point gap to Wilmslow in third.
