Former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton visits Middleton Select Boxing Club

Date published: 28 March 2018

The former world champion boxer Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton visited the Middleton Select ABC on Wednesday (27 March).

The famous boxer and his son, Campbell, visited the amateur club for some sparring and to scope out the up-and-coming boxers.

Martyn Lynch, head coach and chairman, said: “I have been friends with Ricky since his amateur days. His son often does some sparring with us, so they came in on Wednesday night.

“Ricky made the kids’ night, they did some sparring, took photos with them all and signed autographs whilst taking a look at some of our talent. He is a great guy, making the children happy.

“Never forget your roots, he hasn’t.”

Hatton is one of the UK’s most successful, and arguably the most popular British boxer of all time. Born in Stockport, he made his debut in September 1997, going on to win 45 of 48 fights with 32 knockouts throughout his career. He was awarded an MBE in 2007 for his services to sport.

Following a prolonged hiatus, Hatton retired in 2012, after losing to Ukranian Vyacheslav Senchenko.
