Boxing: Grant Kershaw wins in style

Date published: 11 May 2018

Grant Kershaw, of Hamer Amateur Boxing Club, answered the arrogance of Asim Arsshad, from Tylsley Centurions Boxing Club, in style with a comfortable victory at the 147 Club in Walkden.

Arsshad stepped into the ring to a thunderous roar from his local supporters and came out for round one to chants of Asim, Asim echoing around the room.

Arsshad showed Kershaw no respect by hanging his arms by his side whilst looking to show faints before unloading fast combination punches.

The Hamer boxer used his experience to keep his distance whilst he landed a long jab followed by quick one, two combinations which continually connected.

As the round progressed Arsshad began to back away from Kershaw's jab which allowed the Hamer boxer space and time to unload solid punches and all Arsshad could do was to throw wide swing punches which continually missed.

At the start of the second round Arsshad tried to force the pace of the contest but it wasn't long before Kershaw found his range again and with his long reach advantage he was constantly landing punches on his opponent's chin.

The jab was the key to success for the Hamer boxer and he used it with great efficiency to take the round.

In the third and final round, Kershaw kept his opponent at bay using the whole of the ring whilst continuously shooting out his long and fast jab. All Arsshad could do was pursue his opponent and try and land swinging punches which consistently missed.

It was a comfortable contest for Kershaw and all three judges voted in his favour by unanimous decision.

Hamer coach Alan Bacon said: "It is great to get back to winning ways."
